Walking on the spiritual path guarantees one thing – a frequent encounter with your inner demons. Their sole objective is to drag you back into old habits, and the ensuing loop of guilt, shame and self-doubt.
These demons don’t come at you head on. They merely whisper doubts and justifications to convince you that falling from the path isn’t that bad –
“One lie won’t hurt anyone.”
“You can skip meditating today. Do it twice tomorrow!”
“You are a normal human being, not a Saint. You can give in to temptation once in a while.”
During such moments, the only guardian angel who can protect you is your awareness. When you become aware, these demons become as powerless as darkness in front of a candle flame. Awareness also brings along a host of other angels – a powerful takeaway from a Satsang, some soulful words from your favourite Bhakti, or even the simple act of remembering the One who loves you the most (and will continue to do so no matter how many times you fall).
Each time you choose to be aware during your daily routine, the guardian angel becomes stronger. The demons may keep coming back with renewed force. But remember, even pitch-black darkness doesn’t stand a chance in front of a strong, unwavering flame.
