Whenever we seek to derive joy from objects, people and situations, what we are actually doing is try to find it within us. Be it a beautiful place, delicious food, a happy memory, a hobby or a good friend, that experience, that feeling of satisfaction is always within us.
Imagine that you are in a deep sleep and you get teleported to your favourite place where you have everything you desire. If you continue to remain in deep sleep, you wouldn’t be able to witness it or experience it at all. It is the same reason why an unconscious person cannot experience joy.
This means that no matter how far we wander around this planet in search of adventure, no matter how much wealth we accumulate to reach fulfilment, no matter how many people we have in our life whose company we cherish, these external stimuli can only induce happiness if we are aware of it happening within us. They cannot ‘make’ us joyful. It is something that has to arrive from within.
Even the word ‘Enjoy’ has the prefix ‘En’, which signifies furthermore that the source of joy lies within ourselves.
If the source of joy is within us, then why aren’t we happy the whole time we are awake? And why are so many people in the world trying to seek it elsewhere ?
A seeker meditating to experience happiness within
Our joy will always be short-lived if we seek it in things that are short-lived themselves. To be joyful doesn’t signify smiling and laughing all day long. Being truly happy means to live in those rare moments of Bliss where we experience our true form, above and beyond this material world. It means living for a purpose Higher than ourselves. It means to be in harmony with ourselves. And a lot of people aren’t ready to accept this simple, astonishing fact that they are a bundle of joy. We feel it when we are mindful of its presence. It is often difficult to witness that blissful state when we have obscured it with layers of ego, ignorance or hatred. They keep us in that deep sleep and slowly destroy our self awareness. And thus we are busy wandering places and chasing illusions.
Happiness can be invoked from the simplest of things when we are aware of who we are within.
