A man sat by the riverbank at sunset with a sombre expression. After a while, a saint came and sat next to him, holding some grains which he was feeding to the nearby birds. Observing the saint’s joyful demeanour, the troubled man hesitantly asked him, “Why are you so happy?”
The saint, in turn, asked him, “Why are you so sad?”
The man replied with a heavy tone of disappointment in his voice, “I love my wife and children so much, but I don’t receive the same kind of love from them. I give my 100% every day at work, but my boss never appreciates my hard work. This world only knows how to take, no one cares about giving back!”
The saint pondered for a moment and said, “Take these grains and feed the birds.” The man obliged, and gradually felt himself becoming calm. The saint remarked, “I feed them every day. They either peck at the grain and fly away, or completely ignore my efforts. But never a single expression of gratitude. How selfish!”
The man chuckled. “They are just free, not selfish.”
The saint smiled and asked, “And your wife, children, boss are not?”
Having gained the most important realisation of life, the man returned home to sleep peacefully, while the saint remained there to awaken a few more…
