Sometimes, the right words come after spending hours staring at a blank screen and a blinking cursor. The right melody strikes after playing thousands of jarring permutations of notes. The right solution becomes obvious only after trying and eliminating many wrong ones.
Giving up when you are frustrated is the worst time to quit.
Because those moments of apparent standstill, failure and discomfort, are the moments when the real work happens silently in the background. They trigger a property of the brain crucial for survival and growth of any kind – neuroplasticity, or in simpler terms, the brain’s ability to change and adapt to an ever-changing external environment. Think about it – if the brain never experienced any pain or discomfort, why would it ever want to change?
The next time you are stuck, take a break and give your brain something the mind can never afford – patience.
