Most of us carry a monkey on our backs. At least one, if not many.
Addictions, overthinking, anger, fear… obviously, there are too many in the gang to name them all.
How do you get rid of the monkey? To know that, we must understand why the monkey sticks around in the first place. Because we feed it what it craves. To regain your freedom, simply start feeding the monkey something it never expected.
Have a shopping addiction? Buy what the monkey wants, but give it away to someone who needs it more.
Overthink much? Feed your monkey faith, the realisation that there is a Higher Power that has everything under control – the thing that you are worrying about, as well as the countless other things that are beyond the scope of your thinking.
Get angry too easily? Grab a pen and write down whatever it is that the monkey wants you to do in the moments of anger. Read it again an hour later. Chances are that the monkey would have calmed down.
Scared of failures? Do something that you’re guaranteed to fail at. And when the inevitable happens, notice that the Earth doesn’t stop spinning. Share this revelation with the monkey too.
Yes, as the cliche goes, these solutions are easier said than done.
But they are worth a try. Because the only other option – carrying that monkey until your last breath – isn’t going to be any easier.
