The sight of a falling apple sparked a revolutionary insight in Sir Isaac Newton, leading him to formulate the law of universal gravitation. While deriving the precise mathematical equation of this law was undoubtedly a feat of intellectual brilliance, Newton’s true genius lay in his ability to see beyond the obvious. Had he restricted his vision to the apple or the tree from which it fell, seeking the cause within those limited parameters, he would have wasted his time, and probably his life as well.
We too keep encountering ‘falling apples’ – unexpected consequences arising from others’ actions. A single piece of baggage misplaced by the airlines ruins someone’s vacation. One minor security flaw costs a company billions of dollars. One virus sends the entire planet into lockdown.
In such situations, the tendency to fixate on a specific action or individual often leads us down a path of unproductive blame and resentment. Instead of seeking to pinpoint blame or trying to derive the complex cause-effect equation that led to the ‘fall’, life can be simplified by applying the universal law – behind every falling apple, there are much larger forces at play.
Observe the incident, note the learnings, and keep moving forward.
